Chapter Eleven

Back in their safe room in Hamburg airport, Sarah is studying Jane intently.

Something is different.

The hair, the clothing? Sarah isn’t sure. She is about to ask Jane when there is a quick sharp knock at the door. Sarah moves to open it a crack, and is greeted by the security officer who has been guarding the room.

‘What?’ Sarah asks bluntly.

Without answering, he pushes the door open and steps into the room.

‘I have news,’ he states, addressing all three of them.

‘Is everything okay?’ Jane asks.

The security officer throws her a bemused look.

‘Relatively speaking,’ Sarah adds.

‘Amongst all of the shit that you have brought here,’ he responds, ‘yes. I believe it might be.’

‘Are you going to stand there looking stupid all day, or tell us?’ Sarah prompts.

‘The other member of your party is here.’

‘Marshall is back?’ Sarah asks to confirm.

‘No. Charlie.’

‘That’s impossible!’ Sarah blurts out.

All eyes in the room turn towards her.

‘I meant,’ she continues quickly, ‘that’s irresponsible. Coming in here and making bold statements in front of his child and partner. What if you are wrong?’

‘I am not wrong,’ the officer states. ‘He has been security cleared according to Marshall’s instructions.’

‘When can we see him, please?’ Phoebe asks politely.

The security officer bends his knees to bring his face roughly level with Phoebe’s.

‘It won’t be too long honey,’ he tells her.

Then he stands back up to address Jane.

‘He is being debriefed by Homer, and then we will bring him straight here. It shouldn’t take any longer than twenty minutes or so.’

‘Thank you,’ Jane responds, looking exhausted.

‘Anything else?’ he says with a sneer as he turns back to Sarah.

But Sarah isn’t listening, and waves him away with a hand gesture.

It isn’t Charlie, she tells herself. Which means it is someone sent to kill or capture them.

She needs a plan, and fast.
